Pentax and Nikon seem to have figured out how to do it, so it makes sense for the newbie-to-Minolta-AF to ask if Minolta figured out how to do it, also!Īnyway, no one makes anything in AF auto focus mount that is equal to my Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2 or to my Vivitar Series 1 28-105mm f/2.8-3.8 that can focus to 1/4" in front of the lens.

Why not just add AF lenses?Ī: Because we HAVE The MC/MD lenses right now! -) And it would be nice to interchange them back and forth on demand, keeping BOTH manual focus AND auto focus camera in our kit bag. almost all of the MC/MD lenses were replaced with better AF versions and some AF lenses not available in the manual focus mount. Really, the ONLY things we loose from the lens are metering wide open and infinity focus OR angle of capture (Tamron Adaptall lenses loose neither), and the only things we loose from the camera are auto focus and some types of sophisticated metering on some camera models (most Minolta AF models revert to center weighted averaging metering when there is no compatible electronic lens attached). BUT, the Minolta AF Alpha/Dynax/Maxxum 7 CAN use the 14-segment honeycomb meter in manual focus mode, so there's hope for using SOME of the sophisticated auto exposure features, right? why put older MC lenses on an AF body when you won't get the functions of AF with the lenses. That's all - "what's the most modern box that will take my existing lenses?" is how I read the questions. So, I think the inquiry is to get a modern, automated box onto which we can slap our sweet and trusty ol' lenses and keep on shootin'. And they have a built-in motor drive WITH REWIND! Wow! As a service replacement I had upgraded to a still-old Minolta X-700 camera that DID use my existing lenses, and I found a big and heavy Motor Drive 1 which could wind-on for me, but not rewind! Auto rewind? What an improvement! Much later, when I read about modern Minolta AF Auto Focus cameras with their 14-honeycomb metering and auto bracketing and spot metering and dial-in flash compensation I just drooled. Heck, I remember when I didn't know the difference between MC and MD! I met Minolta through a match-needle SR T 100 and knew nothing before or after - didn't "need" to. I remember when I didn't know the Minolta SR/MC/MD/X-600 manual focus lenses wouldn't fit on the modern AF Auto Focus cameras. So when we shop for new stuff, we want it to world with our older stuff.

Hi Minolta Photography friends and mentors,Īlthough I have one of the web pages at that answerers this perenial "Minolta MF lenses on AF cameras?" question, and I have already posted more than once to the archives, I have some additional thoughts to share, provoked into this, of course: There are also high quality zooms available at affordable prices 70-210 f4, 24-50 f4 - depending on what you want to cover. What you may want to consider doing is keeping you MD/MC lenses with you XE-7 which is a good camera anyway, because there is still a good market for high quality MD/MC lenses - and then build a seperate AF kit. Supprised you didn't notice this forum thread, it was only posted a couple of months ago, but it does go through the issue thoroughly. However, saying this, you may find that some of the slightly older models fit you needs better - I refer to for a fairly accurate comparison.Īs for the minolta MD/MC to AF mount. If you want to consider a good minolta AF SLR i would personally point you in the direction of the dynax 5, or if you want a really top model you should most definately consider the dynax 7 - but i don't know what you price range is.
